By fifteen I was the one answering the phone, because my mother is a fast worker and a slow texter, and every unanswered text was a lost slot. I bought a two-dollar notebook and drew a grid: seven columns for days, four rows for the houses, a margin for supplies. Then I changed how we talked to clients. I asked for a window instead of a time, because traffic on the 805 does not care about anyone's plan. I put the two Chula Vista houses back to back so we were not crossing the city twice. I kept a waitlist, and when someone canceled I called people in the order they had asked. In one month we went from four regular houses to six without adding a single Saturday. I also learned the limit of what I could fix. A client told my mother she should be grateful for the work. I wanted to drop her that day. My mother said we would decide in January, when the schedule was slower and we had more choices. We dropped her in January. I had the anger; she had the plan, and the plan is what changed our situation. My community is small and specific: one van, two workers, six households who need their kitchens back by noon. Making it better meant building the ordinary structure that let a fifteen-hour week fit inside a family. My brother comes with us now. I gave him the notebook for one Saturday. He drew the grid wrong and fixed it himself.
